News Flashes

This area is for bits of news about the Club and its members. If you have news to post, send it to: (news@capecodtaiji.org).

February 23, 2004: Our mid-winter banquet was held at Jade in the Mashpee Commons. The food was wonderful, but our group was too large to fit into their private room, so were seated in the main dining room which didn't work very well for our meeting. Fortunately there was very little business to conduct. Jane McLaughlin was honored for finishing learning our Guang Ping form. Jane was just thrilled to finally be a finisher and said, "What a great feeling of accomplishment!" And of course, because it was Jane, there were lots of congratulatory hugs!

August 19, 2003: The 2003 Annual meeting and dinner was held at Peking Palace. About 25 members and guests attended. Evelyn Janerico was honored in absentia (she was unable to attend) with a club certificate of recognition signed by all present for finishing learning the entire Guang Ping set. Dues for the coming year remain at the $75 level that was set at last year's meeting.

February 1, 2003 The club put on a Chinese New Year of the Ram Celebration and Tai Ji demonstration at the Woods Hole Community Hall. 12 club members participated. The program featured some information about the Chinese calendar system and New Year's traditions, a balancing contest for kids, a narrated demonstration of the Guang Ping set, and a demonstration of Tai Ji Sword. Two door prizes and a prize for the balancing contest winner were awarded.

October 3, 2002: The Thursday night practice session moves to its new location in the North Falmouth Elementary School gym. Due to the high ceiling and the fact that we don't have to be out of the building until 9:30, the sword group will resume instruction at the end of each session.

September 11, 2002: The Club participated in Heritage Plantation's 9-11 memorial day by putting on a demonstration and introductory class. Seven club members participated and about 25 people attended. Feedback on the program from both attendees and the Plantation staff was all positive.

August 27, 2002: The 2002 Annual meeting and dinner was held at Peking Palace. 30 members and guests were in attendance. We were pleased to see Audrey Edwards and Deb Vieira. Both have had surgery (hip and shoulder respectively) and were unable to do Taiji this spring. The annual meeting voted to reduce dues for this year from $90 to $75. Treasa Thomas stepped down after serving as Treasurer for 3 years, during which time she did a fantastic job. Darby Rioux was elected as our new treasurer. Barbara Blair will stay on as Assistant Treasurer and will also be taking on the responsibility of doing PR work for the club in the form of press releases about our activities and events.

February 13, 2002: The mid-winter banquet at Peking Palace was well attended by members and their guests. Two members were honored for finishing: Bunny Lavender and Ben Gutierrez. Ben was not able to be present because he moved out of state shortly after finishing. There was a brief business meeting that consisted mostly of announcements about the spring practice session schedule.

August 21, 2001: The 2001 Annual meeting and finishing dinner was a pleasant event. Turnout was reasonably good and the buffet was excellent as usual. Five members; Marty Patrick, Audrey Edwards, Darby Rioux, Mary DeCosta and Penny Taylor where honored for finishing. The annual meeting was relatively brief and efficiency run by club treasurer Treasa Thomas and Freddie Diamond who was standing in for assistant treasurer Barbara Blair.

February 7, 2001: Our mid-winter banquet at Peking Palace was well attended and the buffet dinner enjoyed by all. Jen Kano gave a brief report on her experiences at the Guang Ping Association Conference, and Jane Parhiala was congratulated for finishing with a certificate signed by all members present.

October 30, 2000: Jen Kano attended the Guang Ping Tai Ji Association Conference in McAfee, NJ on October 27-29. It was a very intensive weekend with workshops by some of Tai Ji's top masters and teachers. See her entry about her experiences on our Tai Ji Journal page.

September 1, 2000: Happy Birthday to us! The Club turns 5 years old today!

Dues bills for our 6th year will be going out shortly. Dues for this year have been set at $75. This is $25 more than it was last year, but it is $25 less than it was during our first 4 years. The 1999 annual meeting voted to reduce dues for one year to $50 in honor of the new millennium and the year of the dragon. The Club sustained a small loss as a result, but voted to increase dues back up to just $75 as this seemed sufficient to cover our expected expenses.

August 29, 2000: The 2000 Annual meeting and finishing dinner was a great success. Over half the membership was present (29), and buffet was excellent. Four members; Jack Maenpaa, Deb Vieira, Janet Murphy, and Gia Huang; where honored for finishing. The annual meeting took quite a while as there was a lot of business to conduct. Treasurer Treasa Thomas and assistant treasurer Barbara Blair ran a most efficient meeting, and the members present participated thoughtfully throughout.

August 19, 2000: Congratulations to Gia Huang who finished learning the set at a Gus Canty Center, Falmouth practice. Gia attended classes twice a week (Rec. center and World Gym) and practiced diligently between sessions.

August 3, 2000: Congratulations to Jack Maenpaa who was in Maryland July 28-30 participating in a national martial arts tournament. He took second place in the Guang Ping Tai Ji intermediate division, and two thirds in push hands.

June 27, 2000: Congratulations to Deb Vieira and Janet Murphy who finished learning the set at a World Gym, Mashpee practice. Deb and Janet both started Tai Ji in the Fall of 1999 in Jen Kano's Falmouth Night School 6 week introductory class.

June 24, 2000: Summer practice sessions on Saturday mornings start up with 14 participants. It was a diverse group with representatives from most of our winter practice sessions, a couple of Diane's students, and some people new to the Club. Potential new members are welcome to try Tai Ji for the summer, free of charge at this session.
